I love the fact that no matter who I meet who has a loved one in the military, there's an immediate bond with that person. We just understand each other. What do you like?

does anyone's employer get mad if you ask for time off to see your s/o, if so how do you deal with it?  I recently started a new job and before orientation I had already told them dates that I needed off and it seemed okay, but I'm scared that I'm not going to get like any time off to spend with my Marine the week before he deploys :/

wow. How ironic. I just put in my request yesterday to have 12 days off to spend with my honey when she gets back from bootcamp. I told my manager about a month ago that I would be taking this time off. However, when I put the request in, she looked at me like I was crazy and said "2 weeks??". I stood my ground as if it was non-negotiable. As long as they know about it way ahead of time, I don't think they should deny your request.

okay Thanks, I just feel bad because like I'll be working for like 2 weeks, then taking like 3 days off, which I think if I explain I only have a week, but I don't know how they will react, I work in a nursing home and the position was open for like 3 months, so to me, I feel like they've figured it out for that long and that they could let me spend time with him before he leaves for 9 months.

I'm very lucky to work at a day care, it works around the regular school year calendar, my DF has only been home twice, since he left overseas, and both times he came down on Christmas break, this past Dec he was home for 1 month part of Dec and Jan, I had 2 weeks off from Christmas break, so requested 2 more weeks off, 2 weeks before he came on his leave, and my boss was pretty cool about it, I was  surprised since it was on a short notice, but she was really happy for me.

YES! My immediate manager is horrible about it. We have more than enough people to cover shifts but wont allow more than 2 requests off per day (we have 20 some employees just for my department and never have more than 6-8 on at a time.. most days its 4) People have requested off every holiday for the year already. Of course with the military - I don't know dates that far in advanced! I pretty much tell him I WON'T be in whether he decides to approve my leave or not. I'm 6 months pregnant too and he is barely working around Drs appointments with out a fuss.
